Intro to Astro Photography

Intro to Astro Photography

Sunday 19 July
Birdlings Flat 7591 - 8:30pm - 2 Hours
Matthew Musson
Do you gaze up at the night sky with wonder? What about looking up at the stars and thinking, how old that light you are seeing is? Maybe you watch as day and night morph into one, and the stars come out to play.

This meetup is going to cover off everything you need to know to start capturing amazing single shot astrophotography and a few extra bits of helpful advice. The learnt basics of capturing a single frame will form the building blocks of your astrophotography journey. Think of this meetup as your first step on that journey or for those who have already started, maybe a road sign.

Astrophotography looks amazing and packs a real punch, however, you do not need to spend a fortune to partake. Does gear make a difference, the simple answer is yes, but it is not the deciding factor when it comes to astrophotography. This meetup will look at planning your session, camera settings, required equipment. I want this meetup to help you maximise your current gear as your start capturing milky way shots.

Architecture Photography

Architecture Photography

Sunday 09 August
Hereford Street, Christchurch Central - 9:30am - 2 Hours
Matthew Musson
Architectural photography can be a great way of exploring and documenting a city, whether it's your home or on holiday. Its about capturing not only the design and accurate representation of a building, but to have the shots be aesthetically pleasing to the viewer's eye. An architectural photographer makes pictures, not takes pictures.

In this session, we will be covering how to better understand Architecture photography and we'll be looking at ways to take some impressive shots and the camera settings to use.

Matthew was equal parts great teacher and experienced photographer. Was one of the best workshops I?ve been to. Was super impressed with how the course was run - was really structured, concepts were clearly explained and had supported practice. Would definitely go again and hugely recommend learning from Matthew. His technical skill set and being able to support learners across different camera types was very good.

Originally from Derbyshire, England. I came to New Zealand when I was seven years old. In my last two years of high school, I did photography as an elective and I became passionate about it. I decided to further study in photography, and I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and a Post Grad Diploma in Creative Arts at Ara. In 2019 I was fortunate to be one of one of three students to be nominated for the New Zealand Student Photographer of the year award. At this present time my business revolves around photographing events/sports but I also distribute my Wildlife/landscape and creative art photography.

I enjoyed a photowalk event with Laurie Gallant and the Sacramento Photography group visiting Horton's Iris Farm. I always bring my Infrared camera with me in hopes of getting some good IR shots. When I saw the old red truck, I HAD to shoot it in IR! This is one of my favorite shots from that day and will go into my portfolio for sure!

I was on holiday in Sydney and I went to Circular Quay to take some night time photos, when I saw that the opera house was lit up. I took a couple of photos ,then went to change my lens.By the time I had done this I saw the lights on the opera house had gone out. I then realised it was a rehearsal for Vivid a Sydney winter light show which takes place around the harbour.
