Intro to Astro Photography

Intro to Astro Photography

Saturday 17 August
Birdlings Flat 7591 - 8:30pm - 2 Hours
Matthew Musson
Do you gaze up at the night sky with wonder? What about looking up at the stars and thinking, how old that light you are seeing is? Maybe you watch as day and night morph into one, and the stars come out to play.

This meetup is going to cover off everything you need to know to start capturing amazing single shot astrophotography and a few extra bits of helpful advice. The learnt basics of capturing a single frame will form the building blocks of your astrophotography journey. Think of this meetup as your first step on that journey or for those who have already started, maybe a road sign.

Astrophotography looks amazing and packs a real punch, however, you do not need to spend a fortune to partake. Does gear make a difference, the simple answer is yes, but it is not the deciding factor when it comes to astrophotography. This meetup will look at planning your session, camera settings, required equipment. I want this meetup to help you maximise your current gear as your start capturing milky way shots.

Matt was a really engaging knowledgeable tutor. We didn't really know what to expect from the class beforehand and happily found his methods and friendliness put us at ease instantly. The 4 basic concepts he taught us in the beginner class were delivered in an easily digested manner and we were given ample time to practice each one in order to start to feel confident applying each one. The handout he provided during the class will be forever useful in our photographic journey. Will definitely do more of his classes in the future

Matt gave a good overview of architectural photography with a handout to accompany it. He managed to get us to multiple locations and spent time with each attendee over the two hours. Very happy with that approach which worked well.

Excellent event and appreciated the guidance and feedback from Matt. While the early start time on a cool Sunday was initially a shock to the system, it was certainly the best time as there was adequate light and few people around to muddy the view.

Great to meet others on the photography journey. And good to get some helpful tips from Matt. I found it helpful to be in a small group (of 3) and to interact with the others - looking at their images and talking about what we are doing too. I also appreciated the free time to wander and find places to photograph but to have that meet up time to gather together again and move on.

I liked the way we would learn one thing then put it into practice before learning the next. I've done a similar course (many years ago) but with 3 hours in a classroom setting before doing ant practical which was very dry.

Originally from Derbyshire, England. I came to New Zealand when I was seven years old. In my last two years of high school, I did photography as an elective and I became passionate about it. I decided to further study in photography, and I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and a Post Grad Diploma in Creative Arts at Ara. In 2019 I was fortunate to be one of one of three students to be nominated for the New Zealand Student Photographer of the year award. At this present time my business revolves around photographing events/sports but I also distribute my Wildlife/landscape and creative art photography.

Castle Hill is an amazing location for Landscape and Astro photography. Used a Nikon Z6ii & 20mm 1.8 lens along with a lens warmer plus the Photo Pills planner. The moon was brighter than expected - 5 days old but it actually did us a big favour in lighting up the rocks with the Milky Way core above it. This is the jpeg with no edits.

Found this little guy jumping around my kitchen. I had always had an interest in trying to capture something so small in detail so decided to give it a go. Pulled out my camera and Laowa 100mm macro lens with my godox v1 and managed to get this shot. He was just a baby so I would say 2mm in size.

I was focusing on a Marsh Harrier and when I put the camera down I saw this Robin perched on the edge of my table. He just stared at me and patiently waited as I reset the camera. I still had my zoom on and almost fell off my seat leaning to get focus. The images of this bird are among my favourite sets....

I was on a photo workshop in the park with about 8 others. We set up for the night in the Cathedral Overlook campground. At about 3:30 am, the leader got us up and we drove, then hiked to this spot. We took astro shots, then waited in place for a couple hours until early light on the cathedral formations. This is was a merging of the two exposures that created this image.

The day before taking the shot, I drove up to RMNP to scout a possible Milky Way shot with Nymph Lake in the foreground. The scouting was successful as it did look like I'd be able to have both the lake and the Milky Way in the shot, so I made a plan to head up there again the next day (July 3rd) and capture what I planned. Prior to heading back up to RMNP, while looking at the map of the area, I noticed another possible location where Fall River would be in the foreground and in my mind, having

A friend of mine discovered this bald eagle nest just north of Lititz. I've been keeping an eye on it for a decent shot. This adult has been keeping guard of its juveniles for some time now. I finally saw the adult sitting just to the right of the nest. I am a very new and amateur photographer and still very much learning. I travel quite a bit and enjoy shooting the places I visit but also love wildlife photography. I really didn't process much other than bring up some of the exposure to g
