Architecture Photography

Sunday 02 February
Hereford Street, Christchurch Central - 9:30am - 2 Hours
Matthew Musson
Architectural photography can be a great way of exploring and documenting a city, whether it's your home or on holiday. Its about capturing not only the design and accurate representation of a building, but to have the shots be aesthetically pleasing to the viewer's eye. An architectural photographer makes pictures, not takes pictures.

In this session, we will be covering how to better understand Architecture photography and we'll be looking at ways to take some impressive shots and the camera settings to use.

Black and White Photography

Black and White Photography

Sunday 09 March
Hereford Street, Christchurch Central - 9:30am - 2 Hours
Matthew Musson
The Meet up theme is focused on black and white images. You may think certain photos will benefit from a black and white filter. However truly great black and white photography is all about telling story.

It is about making the subject the whole focus without having colour distract from this. Black and white images are timeless, there is just something about them that makes them so artistic and magical.

The Long Exposure Photography Meetup was a great way to meet others interested in photography, and gain some great tips. Matthew was great at demonstrating different concepts for us and then allowing us to try on our own. It was a lot of fun and I would highly recommend for anyone interested in learning more about long exposures.

Originally from Derbyshire, England. I came to New Zealand when I was seven years old. In my last two years of high school, I did photography as an elective and I became passionate about it. I decided to further study in photography, and I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and a Post Grad Diploma in Creative Arts at Ara. In 2019 I was fortunate to be one of one of three students to be nominated for the New Zealand Student Photographer of the year award. At this present time my business revolves around photographing events/sports but I also distribute my Wildlife/landscape and creative art photography.

I'd gone to catch sunrise at Mission Bay specifically to get the runners on this curve at sunrise. I was distracted by the traffic and noted the bus about to leave the stop behind me. I put the camera on the all, set it for a 4 sec exposure and waited until the bus was in perfect position , blurring those light lines to match up with th already stunning sunrise.

The Great Reno Balloon Race was this weekend. About a dozen balloon are up and aglow before dawn. This beautiful one was my favorite. Most shooting were using auto white balance, cloudy, or 5600K to keep the yellow cast from the flame. I prefer a white balance which retains the true colors of the balloons, especially for this balloon.

This shot was taken on my first day into this trip. My wife and I decided to spend Labor Day weekend in the mountains which was wonderful but also very busy which isn't the best for wildlife photography. However, I did come away with some good shots from my outing (mostly landscape) and this is by far one of my favorite. I love how the light is striking the deer's face while he is mostly shrouded in shadow. I took this with a Nikon 200-500mm @ 500, 1/160s, ISO 100 and f6.3. I shot this across th
