Street Photography Meetup

Saturday 10 May
Hereford Street, Christchurch Central - 10am - 2 Hours
Matthew Musson
People, cafes, vendors, street merchants, buskers, historic buildings, art installations and much more. The power of observation underpins the art of great street photography. Learning to "see" interesting detail is a practised skill and we introduce you to easy methods that will open your photographer's eye and expose you to a world that is alive with detail. The most rewarding part of the class is learning how to approach interesting people and have them willingly pose for you.

We will also go over settings, focusing techniques and lens choices common to street photography to help us capture those random chance encounters.

Good 2 hours, plenty of time for each of us to get advice and to work on our own. Location is good.

Enjoyable event with some useful feedback from our instructor Matt. I've done this particular course twice before, and so covered the same physical areas in the central city. I still found new things though so am very pleased I did it, plus of course it's a great opportunity to chat with other hobby photographers.

Matt talked us through what we had to do to successfully get the shots we all wanted. He spent time with us as a group and individually. His knowledge and ability to pass it on is great and his friendly manner makes it a pleasure. I would recommend this short course to anyone. 10/10. Well done Matt.

Originally from Derbyshire, England. I came to New Zealand when I was seven years old. In my last two years of high school, I did photography as an elective and I became passionate about it. I decided to further study in photography, and I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and a Post Grad Diploma in Creative Arts at Ara. In 2019 I was fortunate to be one of one of three students to be nominated for the New Zealand Student Photographer of the year award. At this present time my business revolves around photographing events/sports but I also distribute my Wildlife/landscape and creative art photography.

It feels like a snapshot of a summer evening where time slows down. The subject?s natural pose, minimal makeup, and earthy accessories give the impression of authenticity, capturing not just a person, but a feeling.

We had just learned the passing of a close friend. We stopped at Lake Dunstan, Cromwell to the left, and saw this wonderful sunset and halo. Quite a fitting finale for a lost mate. Image taken on Iphone. Whites and blacks adjusted for the poor camera quality.

No nothing special just a case of right time right place. My partner was waiting to start work and noticed the sunrise looked incredible and decided to take out her iPhone and snap a picture of it.

I was walking around the rocks at sunset, enjoying the clouds, and thinking I had better get to shelter as that rain burst was heading my way. The sun suddenly highlighted the underside of the rain cloud, and I managed a few shots.I also got rained on very soon afterwards!Canon R6M2 with kit lens 24-105mm.ISO 2000, 24mm, f9.0, 1/1000s. The Old Oak Tree, 2025.This is one of my favorite trees. It is situated alone in a huge field on a little farm near where I live. Every time I see it and the little rope swing that hangs from it, it just fills me with a sense of peace and tranquility. I wanted to portray that in this minimalist, high key version of it.
